Welcome to the Writing Centre
Welcome to the Writing Centre, a unit of Student Academic Success Services (SASS) and a partner in the Queen’s Learning Commons.
Writing well is an essential skill for university students, but even accomplished writers find writing challenging at times. Whether you are a student, faculty member, staff member, or parent of a student, we invite you to explore our website to learn how we can help those who use our services develop their writing skills and become more confident writers.
We work with writers at all levels of proficiency, at any stage of the writing process, on any type of academic writing – essays, reports, labs, dissertations, and more. Students from all disciplines and all levels of academic progression – undergraduate and graduate – come to us for help with
- brainstorming ideas
- working on an outline or draft
- refining a thesis statement
- strengthening an argument
- improving grammar and style
- overcoming writer’s block
Our sessions are collaborative and rely on your active participation. And, although we do not proofread or edit, we can assist you in developing these skills yourself – in every session, we help you to identify issues in your writing and demonstrate the strategies you can use to improve.
The Writing Centre offers free one-to-one consultations, specialized support for English language learners, group workshops, and other resources directly to students; we also visit classrooms at the request of faculty members to deliver discipline- and course-specific writing workshops specifically tailored to that group’s writing needs. Many students find our writing handbook and online tip sheets valuable resources, as well.
Please peruse our website to learn more about how to book an appointment, register in one of our many workshops or access our other resources.
