How to make studying FUN!

When studying, do you ever feel stressed? Overwhelmed? Bored out of your mind?! Well, I am by no means a professional in studying, but I do have some ideas that could help you out!

Here’s my take on how you can make studying more enjoyable:

  1. Colour code your weekly schedule

Colour coding and decorating your schedules can help with making a tedious task more entertaining. If you’re the type of person who prefers to keep things plain and simple, it helps to invest in an organizer/notebook you like. Using an agenda that you actually like can make a huge difference. Even taking out of our bag will bring a smile of satisfaction to you face.

  1. Create/find a playlist full of your favourite songs

Studying with music can be very enjoyable! And sometimes it’s good to mix up your tracks. For example, I love listening to hip hop, rap and RnB. However, sometimes I find it easier to study to jazz music. Find music that works for you! If you’re the type of person who prefers complete silence, listening to music during your study break is a great way to relax.

  1. Bring snacks to you study session

Make your own healthy veggie and dip snack, cut fruits for yourself and reward yourself! I suggest getting treats from the ARC Grocery Checkout (Soy Lime Chili Sticks and Chicago mix popcorn are to die for). Sometimes I like to buy gummy bears and reward myself with one after every chapter of reading I finish… Strange, I know, but it works!

  1. Try out a new study spot:
  • Stauffer, Douglas, Bracken
  • 3rd Floor ARC
  • BioSci/Mac-Corry empty classrooms
  • JDUC tables near P&CC
  • On campus cafes: Cogro, The Brew, Tea Room
  • Off campus cafes: Starbucks, Sleepless Goat
  • Red Room in Kingston Hall
  • Common rooms

Sometimes finding a good spot is all about the vibes… Decide what type of lighting you like, think about noise levels, temperature, and comfort (this might sounds weird but I LOVE studying in places where I have easy access to food. 3rd floor ARC is ideal since there are so many food options downstairs!).

  1. Try a new warm beverage

Take a break from your usual order of coffee, and mix things up by ordering something spontaneous! Sometimes it’s the little things that can make a world of difference. A sweet drink always brightens up my day. I would suggest trying the London Fog at the Tea Room!

  1. Take productive breaks

If you struggle with procrastination on social media, try calling a friend/family member, or getting up and talking to a friend or housemate. Social interaction can be a great way to de-stress as long you manage the amount of time you spend on interacting. If you don’t feel like talking to people, a great way to take a break is to get active! Go to the gym, or take a short walk around campus. This will boost your mood and refresh your brain for studying. Another good strategy is studying using the 50/10 rule. Study for 50 minutes, then take a break for 10 minutes. Doing so will help you focus for longer!

  1. Let your creativity flow

A great way to overcome distractions, procrastination, and writer’s block is to get find inspiration through creativity. Practice doodling, drawing, making mind maps, watching documentaries, looking at art, dancing, singing, or listening to music. By channeling your creativity through other mediums, you will be more likely to find inspiration that can be applicable to your work! Group studying can also be a good way to exchange creative ideas with your peers. Before I write a paper, I like to make mind maps and doodle. Visualizing my ideas always helps me overcome writer’s block!

I hope these tips will help you in some way! Just remember, if you’re ever feeling stressed, it’s not the end of the world! Take a step back and appreciate the big picture. Just keep pushing, strive for balance, and you will get through it!
